Dona Nobis Requiem

A rondeau. It’s been a long time, I know, since I’ve posted anything. There’s been nothing this semester so far I’ve been interested in sharing. But this poem assembled itself in the past few weeks, and I think I like it.

Dona Nobis Requiem

on soulmas morn the black trees sway
above us in the kempen gray
grandfather’s breath the old winds hide
beyond the roads of eventide
at autumn’s pyre the black trees pray

the leaf trains pass while yields the clay
its teind to join the winds’ array
over the rose and wand they ride
on soulmas morn

in flame and ash are tangled they
that lanced our hearts with longings fey
your fathers at our back abide
the winds croak round our fireside
but we beside the embers stay
on soulmas morn
